Roses in a Mason Jar

9 x 12″, oil on linen

Just finishes this one, and boy that was fun. Lots of color, and the vase (jar) was really exciting to get all the colors and reflections.

Painting Leaves

howtopaintleaves_lgI love painting leaves. They look like dancers in a french movie about.. dance halls. They look like a flurry of hand gestures. They look like musical notes on a staff (thanks to my friend Kate for that one!). But they’re a challenge. I want them distinct yet not over-enunciated. I want there to be a clear falling off of light, even though each side of the leaf has difference characteristics with regard to reflection.

This is only my method, not necessarily endorsed by others. Though there is a holistic approach to modeling the underpainting and getting the drawing right, achieving the level of detail I want is going to involve some flat-out tinkering. Some people refer to it as “tickling” or “licking the canvas.” (Usually that’s offered as an insult.) But this is how I like it – detail, a feast for the eyes, rendered with fascination and affection.

If you want to learn with me, I have some workshops upcoming. Please check out the Teaching Page.

Working on Multiple Paintings At Once

To more small apple paintings in progress, poster stageYesterday I posted the small apple painting I just finished, and today I’m working on the other two small apple paintings. Two at once. Both. At the same time.

Why? Well for a couple reasons… the paintings are all related to each other visually and working them simultaneously ensures that they have a coherent color harmony. That’s not to say they’re all the same colors – yesterday’s apple is slightly cooler and more somber, and that seemed fitting to me because its panel is square. The square orientation said “somber” to me. Today’s compositions both have more movement, more drive, and so the colors are slightly (truly, very slightly) more… bouncy.

I don’t usually use words like that, at least not out loud. Since I teach a lot, I try to avoid phrases and terms that are unnecessarily vague and attempt more clarity and precision. But in my own work, I indulge random emotional associations and an internal language of color that includes narrative and almost syneasthetic content.

Today I’ll work the backgrounds and leaves, and tomorrow the fruits and foreground. Without being too homogeneous in my mixes, I’m trying to ensure the paintings “bounce” together. I’ll mix for them together, apply together, and compare them side by side as we go forward. That means “windowshading” more than I usually would (attacking the panel section by section), but I think the result will be pretty ok.

Onward apples!

Peaches and Silver

Oil on Linen, 16 x 10″

The challenge with this painting was to balance the soft peach texture against the hard metal, the warm colors against the neutrals, and the lights against the darks. It was an exciting mental puzzle.

Violin Study

Oil painting of an antique violin by Lisa GloriaViolin Study, Oil on wood, 8 x 4″ Click here to purchase

I enjoy doing studies for commissions. Even though it adds many steps, it really improves my fluency with the final painting. The commission will be 12 x 18″. The violin has a certain patina, so much fun to paint.
